Earlier this week, I took another small step toward my goal of inspiring the whole world to take up a bit of painting.
Why do public speaking?
I believe in putting down the phone, stopping the doomscrolling and picking up a pencil, some paper, and a bit of paint would do us all good.
With that in mind, I visited Wells in Somerset for an evening of public speaking at the Town Hall. Thankfully, that night, we had 30-odd attendees from the local Women’s Institute.
As part of my talk, I shared what it’s like to be a professional artist, explored the realities of the practice, and hopefully dispelled a few myths along the way.
At this stage, hoping to whet a few appetites and encourage attendees to try painting for themselves, I introduced them to a portable painting kit—an affordable, compact set about the size of a paperback book, available online. I also shared a few hints and tips on how to get rolling on taking up painting.
The evening went very well, with a lively Q&A session to round things off and a draw to win an original piece of artwork depicting part of the town.
Many thanks to the good people of Wells!
