I cycled over to West Compton to paint these gates topped with carved pineapples. An Italianate grandness in amongst the rough lias stone-built buildings of this part of Somerset.

Their height and the way the shadows crawl up the steps reminds me of ‘Great Expectations’ when the boy Pip when he first approached the house of Miss Havisham.
