A bit about Wardour Street, London

This street in one form or another has been running on the same site running North to South through Soho and China Town since at least 1585, though came to be called Wardour Street in 1686.

You could write a whole book just on the history of this street. During the 20th century it played a key part in the British music and film industries. Wardour Street was the home of the famous Marquee club which featured bands such as Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix, and was a key venue for the punk scene of the 70’s. The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Joy Division were all regular players.

Throughout almost all of the 20th Century Wardour Street was also known as ‘Film Row’. This really took off in the 1930’s, Warner Brothers, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Pathé Film and Hammer films were all based in Wardour Street. Surrounding them were dozens of smaller production and supply companies. In the later part of the 20^th Century much of the larger companies moved out of central London leaving only the smaller, specialised film and effects studios which are still there today.

That said you can still see echoes of these old giants as many of their old headquarters are still there in the shape of Urbanora House, Film House, Cinema House. Twentieth Century House, and Hammer House.
