A bit about Gordon’s Wine Bar, in London
Gordon’s is at 7 Villiers Street, Charing Cross, WC2N 6NE. The frontage is a pretty simple set of dark red boards and meshed window. Whenever I have entered the place it has always been down a set of steps to the cellar bar below.
Once you are down there you are in for a real treat. It has look of a battered cave with the peeling walls covered in dozens of equally battered paintings and prints. All the tables and chairs are miss matching and I don’t think it has ever been dusted. Splendid.
Interestingly its origins go back to 1394 in the court of Edward III when a ‘Free Vintner’ named Arthur ‘Staff’ Gordon owned a property on this site and was issued a licence to sell wine.
It was officially a ‘wine bar’ in 1890 with Rudyard Kipling (Jungle Book, Kim, The man who would be king) lived in the rooms above. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh used to frequent Gordon’s before it closed for a while. It was opened again in 1972 and has been opened ever since.
Needless to say it has a fine selection of wines beer and even cheese.
