Earlier this year I was asked to illustrate a book on flower gardening. I rather enjoy painting flowers as there are so many varieties. With this kind of work comes different challenges around colour, tone and structure. The one thing they all have in common however is delicacy. It’s a real challenge to make them feel light and partially transparent. For me the ideal medium for this is watercolour.
I saw this project as a fine opportunity to increase my skills and with over forty botanical illustrations it was an exciting project to work on. It took over a month to complete.
Although each flower illustration was on a separate page I have gathered a good selection of them into a single scenes so you can get an idea of the final pieces.
